In the popular Reddit community Am I an Idiot? (AITA), a woman is faced with a moral dilemma, asking whether she was wrong to leave her sister’s wedding early because her service dog was denied entry to the wedding.
So Reddit postThe 27-year-old woman explains that she needs a service dog because she suffers from severe anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to a traumatic event that occurred many years ago.
She then revealed that her 30-year-old sister, who was about to get married, was very understanding of her situation and her need for a service dog to function properly in social situations.
A Reddit user also wrote: “My dog is well trained and well behaved.”.
So when the 27-year-old RSVPed to her sister’s wedding, she mentioned that she’d be bringing her service dog with her for very obvious reasons.
But this is where the problems began. “A few days before the wedding, she called me, clearly stressed, to say that while she understood she needed to have a dog, it would be a nuisance and might upset some of the guests.” the woman wrote.
“She asked if I could attend the ceremony and reception without him.”
The Reddit user then went on to explain to her sister how important a service dog is to her well-being, especially in a social setting like a wedding.
She writes: “But she argued that if guests were distracted or the photos were ‘ruined’ by having a dog in them, it would ruin her ‘perfect day.'”
The woman also revealed that her sister offered to have someone nearby to help her if she felt anxious, but she politely declined. “I would like to reiterate that my service dog is essential to my well-being.”
The Reddit user respected his sister’s wedding wishes by attending the ceremony without his service dog.
But a few hours into the reception, the woman began feeling overwhelmed and anxious, so she decided to leave early and explained the situation to her sister.
A Reddit user revealed: “She was clearly upset and later sent me a lengthy email accusing me of treating her wedding like my own and not compromising for her big day.”
The woman also reveals why she feels conflicted about the whole situation and how she handled it. She writes: “Right now my family is divided. Some understand why I had to leave, while others think I should have stayed and ‘stood the testimony’ for my sister.”
When I asked the Reddit AITA community if she was the “idiot” in this situation, the community defended her actions and confirmed that she was, in fact, not an “idiot.”
“It sounds like she was jealous of the attention you get when you have your dog and didn’t want to compete with you on your wedding day.” One Reddit user wrote:
“But you do have a disease. license A (presumed) certified service dog… and she has put herself above your medical needs. She is a TA.”
Another wrote: “If you can handle it, you shouldn’t need a service animal. What part of a service animal does she not understand? I’m sorry this happened.”
The Reddit user’s post was marked by the community as: “He’s not a jerk.”.What do you think?
