Why is the collar a possible culprit? – Dobias Healing Solutions Ph.D.

Pax has a habit of introducing people that are very interesting.

Last year I was walking through Pax in my hometown of Letna Park in Prague. On this walk we came across a lovely woman who is a dog lover with a beautiful rhodesian ridge bag.

When we chatted, the woman said her dog was 11 years old.

“Amazing.” “Your dog looks great and she’s really moving!”

After hearing this compliment, the owner suddenly looked sad and worried.

“Thank you,” she replied. “But he actually has surgery scheduled.”

No wonder she looked worried!

When your dog is scheduled for surgery, I know how nervous it can be for you.

As we continued chat she shared with me that the dog was scheduled for laryngeal paralysis surgery.

You may already know that laryngeal paralysis is a condition that can affect dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds.

This is presented by the lack of laryngeal muscle tension (the muscles in the dog’s neck and throat area) and the collapse of the throat cartilage.

Common symptoms are noisy, harsh breathing and difficulty breathing. In more advanced cases, difficulty breathing and coughing can have a serious impact on the quality of life of a dog…

Traditional medications usually consider congenital or idiopathic (of unknown origin), and surgery is often recommended.

However, when I listened to this owner and observed her dog, I knew that this problem was likely to be resolved without surgery.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not always against surgery, but I’ve seen other, more invasive, high-risk approaches often have great results in cases of laryngeal paralysis.

In this case I chose a route with few regrets and gently shared some suggestions on how to help this lovely Rhodesian Ridgeback without surgery.

A few weeks after our first encounter, I came across another new found friend.

She was all smiling.
