If the ancient battlefield had enlisted in four-legged warriors, these dogs would have been in charge of steel legs and unwavering loyalty. Built for power, courage and intimidation, these varieties were not only born for naps. They were raised for glory. Imagine a fearless dog with purpose recharges in the collision of swords, the roar of battle, and its thickness. Certainly, they enjoy couch time now, but these varieties still carry the hearts of warriors ready to defend, conquer and assert victory.
Cane Corso

The Corso of the Cane was actually designed for ancient wars. Originally from Italy, this breed, descended from a Roman war dog, was used to recharge the enemy lines and protect dog-like property. With his muscular build, intimidating gaze and laser-focused intelligence, Corso the cane would have been a warrior that had made his enemy a second battle plan. They are fearless, incredibly loyal, difficult to intimidate, and make them the kind of ally you definitely want when the spear is flying. Even today, their presence feels like a protective field with a jaw.
Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan Mastiffs were basically bears disguised as dogs, and ancient invaders would have thought twice before messing around with the territory protected by this fluffy juggernaut. Originally bred to protect Himalayan monasteries and villages, these dogs are as intense as giant ones. Their independent spirit and natural doubts of strangers make them an ideal battlefield pedestrian and refuse to retreat from any threat. With lion-like mane and lively bark, they will strike fear in the minds of their enemies before they can see the sword. If the ancient army had a mascot, this would have been their top enforcers too.
Rottweiler
Shutterstock
Known as a butcher dog dog, Rottweiler once flocked to protect travel merchants with livestock, which must have been a horrifying thing on the battlefield. With stocky frames, relentless power and loyalty that could rival any soldier, Rottweiler is a born guardian. Their strong bites, endurance and territorial instincts made them perfect for defending camps, escorting warriors and chasing fallen enemies. Adding their nonsense attitude, there are dogs who say, “Yes, I’ll protect you, and your horse, food supply, self-esteem too.”
Dogo Argencino

Initially raised for large game hunts, Dogo Argencino has the power, stamina and fearlessness that makes Spartans proud. This muscular all-white warrior is known for his courage and pain resistance, the traits that scream the beasts of the battlefield. They were created to defeat wild boars and pumas, so confronting some armored enemies won’t bother. Combine that with immortal loyalty to their packs and you have a dog that doesn’t just follow the order. Do not ask to wear a helmet. It ruins the face of a dramatic war.
Boerboel

Boerboel, originally from South Africa, was raised to protect the Homestead from lions and other major predators. That’s right–Lion. With a chin-dropping mix of brute strength and protective instincts, this dog would have been at the forefront like a walking siege engine. Their gentle and careful nature means they don’t jump into the mess for no reason, but when they do, we wish them good luck to those on the receiver. This is the dog that the ancient king placed by their side. Not only for protection, but even the king needs a bicep bodyguard.
Arabai (Central Asian Shepherd)
Shutterstock
Known as a Central Asian shepherd, Arabai is a living tank wrapped in fur. Used for centuries to protect livestock from wolves and thieves, this variety thrives in harsh environments and does not sway into conflict. They are territorial, independent, as granite, and are perfect for the ancient wars, when the survival of the fittest ruled the day. These dogs were not bred to be kept. They were raised to cover up and win predators. If your ancient army had one of these in security missions, rest assured that your boundaries are safer than Roman fortresses.
Marinoa, Belgium
Shutterstock
Small (er) but powerful, Belgian Marinoa is an elite special manipulation soldier in the dog world. Agile, lightning, and incredibly clever, this variety thrives in a fierce environment and thinks with its feet. Although not bulky enough to breed several other warriors, what they lack in size makes up for speed, obedience and pure resolve. In ancient times, they would have been scouts, messengers and ninjas all rolled into one. You will see them coming – your combat plans will fall apart after 5 minutes.
Akita

Whispering, powerful, and quiet, Akita has an air of stoicism that makes him proud of his samurai. That’s not a coincidence. This Japanese variety has a long history of loyalty and strength, and is often able to protect warriors and nobles. Akitas is calm and confident, but when taunted, they are merciless in their defense. They don’t get much barking, but when they do, that’s probably the last thing their enemies hear. In ancient battlefield environments, they will become quiet warriors you will not ruin unless you have already written your will.
Irish Wolfhound
Tall, majestic, and oddly graceful to the giants, the Irish wolfhounds were initially bred for war and hunting wolves. This breed was once talented as a noble companion and combat aid between kings and warriors. With their size and strength, they were able to knock on a man who grew out of a horse. Despite the gentle nature of their homes, in the fight, these dogs may have cleared their paths like abused lambs. If the legend had fur, it would definitely answer the name “Fin” wearing a plaid quilt.
These dogs were born for battle
Mid Journey
They take naps on orthopedic beds and eat gourmet kibble, but don’t fool them. In ancient times they would have been proud beside the wall of shields. Whether in charge on a large scale or quick and strategic, these puppies prove that their courage, loyalty and a set of dogs make the ultimate fighting companion. I’m happy that they’ll use their power to protect your backyard now, rather than using their power to plunder the empire.
