Cats have gone from living outdoors and blending into the landscape to running the home and helping other cats and kittens.

For years, the community cat roamed the neighborhood, often blending into the background. He was scared of humans and secretly searched for food and shelter.
After surviving several harsh winters, he lost most of his ears to frostbite. “He was part of the local landscape for a long time, but no one came to his aid,” said Chatons Orphelins, a Montreal-based orphan rescue group.
A local animal rights activist noticed the cat’s condition was deteriorating and decided to take it upon himself to rescue the cat.

With the help of some smelly canned fish and a humane trap, the stray cat was finally rescued. “As soon as he smelled the bait, he went into the trap. He didn’t resist or try to escape when the door closed behind him. He was hungry and just wanted some coins.”
After spending about six years outdoors, he’s moved indoors for the first time.

Mossie the cat was in rough shape, with a fresh wound on his nose and infected gums that made it difficult for him to eat, when the Chatons Orpheus rescue team in Montreal took him in, treated him for all his ailments, and placed him in a foster home.
After all the matted hair was shaved off and he received some much needed dental work, he regained his energy and his appetite was good again.

“He has very few teeth left but he no longer struggles to eat. He’s slowly coming out of his shell and accepting being petted by us. He’d never known human affection before coming to us.”
It took several months of positive encouragement and patience from his caregivers to gain his trust.

His eyes lit up when he saw the other cats in the house. Wanting to join them, he came out of hiding to greet them.
“When he first came to us, he was alone all day and had a vacant look in his eyes,” she said. He saw other cats around him and realized he was safe. “He became curious and started mimicking all the other cats’ behavior.”

He began purring when hugged and the fear in his eyes was completely gone. He explored the house with newfound confidence and began to appreciate his comfy bed, toys and all the amenities.
“He loves other cats and is very social. He just wants to be friends with them.”

Normally a “quiet guy,” Mosey has now warmed up to his owner, cuddling with him every night and letting out a few soft “meows” for affectionate attention.
“In the morning, he waits by the bedroom door for his owner and stares at him until breakfast is served.”

“It took time, but he accepted his owner’s kindness and help and is now much calmer, enjoying petting and attention.”
“He’s a sweet boy who loves to nap in his cardboard hut, in the window or in the cat tree with his friends. He’s no longer wary of his surroundings and will even roll over on his back with his paws up.”

Mosey has recently bonded with some rescue kittens and couldn’t be happier – surrounded by these uncontrollable bundles of energy, he’s rediscovered his inner kitten.
He runs around with the kittens and snuggles with them afterwards. “He plays with them and gives them gentle baths like a caring older brother.”

After years of living on the streets, he is finally ready to achieve his dream and find his forever home – a place where he feels safe and loved and can share his days with other cats.
