Catster wants to showcase the underappreciated champions of the animal kingdom – the heroes of the pet world.
We interview some of the most inspiring animal clinics, veterinary hospitals, animal shelters and rehabilitation organizations from around the world and share all of the amazing, and often tough, experiences they face as they work to help, heal, guide, revitalize and protect our furry family members.
These are the stories of unsung animal superheroes!

mission
In your own words, what is the mission and purpose of Small Animal Specialty Hospital?
SASH Our mission is to help pets and their families live their best lives, and we achieve this through a unique combination of multidisciplinary 24/7 emergency and specialty veterinary care, world-class facilities and a total commitment to our patients and their families.
What is your personal mission or goal as a veterinary professional and as an individual?
I am passionate about all areas of veterinary surgery, particularly orthopaedics and education, and my goal is to develop the next generation of highly skilled specialist surgeons and improve patient outcomes in Australia and around the world.
Daily Experiences
What is it like working as a veterinarian in a small animal specialist hospital in Australia?
Becoming a vet is what I have always wanted to do and every day brings new challenges. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a sick or injured patient make a full recovery and return to their owner. Here at SASH, we are so lucky to work alongside experts from many different disciplines, so we can rest assured that we are always providing the highest level of care possible.
How big is your team?
The SASH Alexandria team is almost 100 people strong, including highly qualified veterinarians, nurses, client service and support team members who work around the clock to keep the hospital running smoothly.
Are there any staffing shortages and how are you dealing with them?
There is a talent shortage across the veterinary industry in Australia and many parts of the world, but we are fortunate to be in a very strong position at SASH Alexandria – many talented people in the veterinary industry choose to work at SASH because of our reputation and track record of delivering quality veterinary care.
On average, how many animals do you help per week?
SASH Alexandria sees between 100 and 200 cases per week.
Challenges and rewards
What is the most difficult part of your job? How do you deal with euthanasia and the death of a patient?
The most challenging part of my job is balancing my busy schedule as a specialist surgeon with the leadership of a very capable team as a hospital co-director. Euthanasia or the loss of a patient is never easy. However, as a surgeon, I am grateful for the generally positive outcomes in my field.
What is the biggest challenge facing your organization?
For a relatively new hospital like SASH Alexandria, the biggest challenge is awareness of our services – many local pet owners don’t know we’re available 24/7.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing recovered patients return to their loving families, and we are so lucky to work with such kind and dedicated pet owners.

What are SASH’s main goals for the future?
One of our goals is to constantly innovate and focus on ways to improve patient outcomes. This is achieved by investing in our people, facilities,
How can ordinary people contribute to making your life easier?
It’s always a good idea to make sure your pet receives veterinary care in a timely manner. Delaying a vet visit can lead to problems, especially if you notice something is wrong. Regular check-ups with a local veterinarian are essential to stay on top of any issues that may exist and keep your pet up to date on preventative health care. If you have any concerns outside of opening hours, you can always have your pet examined at a 24/7 facility like SASH Alexandria.
