A private collection of 13 watercolors and sketches by Louis Wain (1860-1939), famous for his humorous depictions of cats, is being offered on the market for the first time in 50 years by Parker Fine Art Auctions. Luxury paintings and frames On Thursday, October 3, 2024The auction starts at 11am in Farnham, Surrey. The collection is being sold by her son and is expected to fetch between £30,000 and £40,000.
Henny Smith, Director of Parker Fine Art “Louis Wain is famous for his human-like depictions of cats, and in this collection there’s a Cat in a Hat, a cat with a great expression, a cat on the beach and even a cat stealing a chicken!”
She continued, “The collection was put together by a woman who worked in an antiques shop in the 1940s and 1950s. She loved cats so much that she had breeds like Blue Burmese and Abyssinians, and she began collecting Wayne’s work because she found it humorous.”
Estimated prices range from £200 to £15,000 and one of the highlights will be ‘Christmas Shopping’. Grisaille Bought on Christmas Eve 1986 from London dealer Michael Parkin, the painting, which depicts a cat shopping at a butcher’s, is expected to fetch between £10,000 and £15,000. [lot 182]The pen, ink and watercolour, entitled “I’m Not Drunk at All”, has an estimated price of £5,000-8,000. [lot 168]Another item is a lithograph titled “The Conductor”, estimated at £200-300. [lot 177] A Lucky Ho-Hoo Cat vase, made for Max Emanuel, is estimated at £300-500. [lot 174].
