Wile, the adorable and adventurous dog, has an incredibly heartwarming story. For over a year, this adorable pup lived side-by-side with a pack of wild coyotes, forming an unlikely bond that defied conventional expectations. His incredible journey from lost pet dog to member of a coyote pack captivated people all over the internet, and many were amazed at the sheer resilience and adaptability Wiley displayed. His adventure, full of unexpected twists, quickly became a story that amazed and inspired animal lovers around the world.
Wiley’s story didn’t begin in the wilderness. At some point, he is believed to have either run away from home or gotten lost, eventually wandering into a dense forest near Kingston, New York. There, fate led him to a rare encounter with a pack of wild coyotes. Sightings of Wile E. and the coyote were first reported about 18 months ago, and since then, Wile E. has been frequently spotted by local residents running with them as if they were one of their own. .

The details of how Wile was able to integrate into a wild coyote pack remain a mystery. Although this unlikely friendship raises many questions, Usher pointed out that it’s not entirely unheard of for domestic dogs and coyotes to coexist in some way. “Some, like the coydog, are the result of a cross between a coyote and a dog. But it’s incredibly rare to see a domesticated dog so completely adopted by a wild pack.”
Despite his new life in the wild, Wile was still a dog with basic needs and vulnerabilities. Coyotes are known for their harsh, survivalist nature, making Wiley’s story even more special. Somehow, he was able to not only survive, but thrive with them, forming a bond that allowed him to fit into the group. But rescuers feared that even though Wiley seemed healthy, living in the wild could eventually take a toll on his health. It became clear that his future would be brighter in a safe, comfortable and loving home.
The call about Wiley came from Sara Nace, a key member of Lost Pets of the Hudson Valley (LPHV), who had been tracking puppy sightings. Although Wiley did not appear to be in immediate danger, both Nace and Asher knew that finding a safe and stable environment for Wiley was the best option. There were also concerns that Wile had an owner who was desperately looking for him. Before proceeding with their research, the team needed to see if Wiley had a microchip or if there were any reports of missing dogs matching his description.
“Our first priority was to ensure that Wiley regularly returned to a familiar location so we could safely capture him,” Asher explained. To accomplish this, they set up feeding stations in the forest and monitored the area using trail cameras. Feeding stations not only serve as a way to track Wily’s movements, but they also encourage Wily to return to the same location frequently.
Cameras soon captured footage of Wiley and his coyote friend, confirming that Wiley was still traveling with the herd. But despite his wild companions, Wiley seemed drawn to the food provided by the rescuers. Within just two days of setting up the feeding station, Wiley’s trap was ready.
“It only took two nights,” Asher said. “He was actually a very easy trap compared to other guys we played.”
The rescue team kept a close eye on Wiley as he approached the feeding station. Even though Wile’s fellow coyotes were nearby, Wile did not hesitate to check the bait and was soon safely inside the trap. When rescuers finally got close, they realized that food was not the only thing the poor pup needed.
Wiley’s fur was covered from head to toe in ticks, evidence of the harsh environment he endured while living in the wild. Asher immediately transported him to the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge (RBARI) for examination. In addition to much-needed medical attention, Wylie also got something he probably hadn’t had in a long time: a warm, comfortable place to sleep.
“Tonight, for the first time in what feels like an eternity, Wiley is curled up in a soft, cozy bed,” Usher said shortly after his rescue.
The next step was to see if Wiley had a microchip or other identification that could lead him to his owner. Unfortunately, no microchip was found, and despite efforts to find reports of lost dogs matching Wiley’s description, rescuers came up empty-handed. This left them with lingering questions. Was Wiley a beloved family pet, or was he abandoned and left to fend for himself?
“I don’t know if he was someone’s lost dog,” Asher admitted. “We searched the internet and called local authorities, but there were no reports matching his description. He could have been either a stray dog or an abandoned dog.”
Regardless of his past, Wiley’s future seemed much brighter. After receiving treatment, it became clear that Wile was a friendly and loving dog. Despite his long stint in the wild, he quickly formed a bond with his rescuers, who were amazed by his kind nature.
“I think Wiley will be ready to recruit right away,” Usher predicted. “He’s a very sweet guy. He leaned over to me and gave me a kiss. Some people think that dogs that have lived in the wild can’t be tamed, but that’s not true.”
As Wiley’s story spread, people were fascinated by his resilience and amazing friendship with a pack of coyotes. Some feared that Wiley had become more feral than tame, but he quickly proved himself to be as affectionate and loyal as any domestic pet. His amazing journey from living among coyotes to finding safety among humans touched the hearts of all who heard about him.

Shockingly, this is not the first time she has been charged with animal cruelty. She has a previous conviction for a similar crime. We must ensure that no more animals suffer or die in her care.
RBARI volunteer Frannie Lolita couldn’t help but shout out to Wiley. “He absolutely loves all the attention and attention,” she said. “He’s such a big marshmallow. We love him so much.”
Now, Wiley is safe and surrounded by love, but his time with Coyote remains one of the most special parts of his story. It’s rare for domestic dogs to form bonds with wild animals, but Wiley’s story reminds us that it’s the most unlikely friendships that can amaze us.
