K9 helps rescue dog trapped in 20-foot tree during Hurricane Helen

A K9 lends a hand to another furry friend in trouble after getting stranded atop a 20-foot tree in East Tennessee due to flooding from Hurricane Helen.

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, the Kingsport Fire Department said its technical rescue team worked with the Murfreesboro Police Department’s K9 Search Unit to locate flood casualties as K9 Cali guided the team to the top of a tree. It was reported that

The police department revealed that during the search, K9 Kali, a 5-year-old bloodhound, began barking uncontrollably and led the team to a tree. There they found a dog perched high on a branch and sitting on a pile of rubble.

Thankfully, KFD firefighters found a nearby ladder that had been washed away by the floodwaters and used it to rescue the dog.

“After rescuing the dog, who was happily removed from the tree, rescuers were able to feed her.” KFD reveal.

Meanwhile, K9 Cali’s handler, Officer Angela Alexander, said she was proud of Cali for a job well done.

“The funny thing about Cali is that she doesn’t like other dogs, but this time it was different.” Officer Angela Alexander said. “I’m so proud of her for helping us find something good amidst all the devastation caused by the floods.”

It’s safe to say that Athena is reunited with her family and is happy to be reunited. The dog continued to wag its tail and lick its owner’s face throughout the reunion.

Athena’s owners, the Faulkner family, said that despite losing everything in Hurricane Helen, they are grateful they have each other and that Athena has returned safely.
