Human influenza viruses in ferrets

By SecretWuff 2 Min Read

Influenza viruses are highly contagious and can be transmitted from humans to ferrets and vice versa, but ferrets are much more likely to catch a human influenza virus from a human than a human from a ferret, and just like in humans, influenza in ferrets is caused by the influenza virus.

Unlike humans, influenza can be fatal in ferrets, especially in young and old ferrets with weakened immune systems. The common flu can also cause secondary bacterial infections and pneumonia, worsening the health of your ferret.

Symptoms and types

Symptoms of this viral infection in ferrets are similar to those in humans and include:

  • Clear, thick mucus coming from the eyes and nose
  • sneeze
  • cough
  • Eye inflammation (redness and swelling)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness and lethargy
  • High fever

These symptoms may last anywhere from 5 to 14 days.

Cause

Influenza viruses spread through direct contact with infected people (humans or animals), through contaminated environments, and through the air.

process

Your veterinarian will diagnose the viral infection, treat it with antiviral medication, and if necessary, treat any secondary complications such as pneumonia. It takes about 1-2 weeks for your ferret to fully recover from the infection.

During this time, it is important to keep your ferret well hydrated and follow any other recommended treatments. Ferrets that are lethargic or won’t eat may require electrolytes to prevent further deterioration of their health.

Prevention

Quarantine any ferrets suspected of having the flu virus, and avoid contact with ferrets if you are sick with the flu. Frequent hand washing will also help prevent the spread of infection through contact.
