9News She was reportedly found under her bed and likely died of smoke inhalation.
The family called the slain dog a hero for saving their life, and in an interview with 9News, Cuddles’ owner, 13-year-old Jackson Corey, said he was still in shock.
“She was very playful and affectionate and wanted to cuddle with everyone.” Cory said.
Corey’s grandparents, Suzanne Elkins and her husband, Victor, spoke to 9News about the incident. “Cuddles would jump onto Victor’s chest and bark in his face, waking him up and letting him know there was danger.”
Elkins said what happened has been difficult for the whole family. “Victor went back into the house through the smoke and flames to look for her and he burned his leg while trying to escape and we never found out what happened to Cuddles after that.” She explained:
“If she hadn’t really done that, who knows what would have happened to us.” Elkins added. “Give your dog some love. I don’t think people appreciate enough how powerful they are.”
