The car show is extremely popular in Southern California, with many proud owners showing off their classic cars. I had the opportunity to attend one of the most popular SOCAL events, the VW Basker Show. It was held at Huntington Beach Pier Plaza and Huntington Beach, California is known for being dog friendly, so we brought along Golden Retriever Kenzo and enjoyed it.
How the VW Basker Show started
I was told by Don Ramseys, one of the owners of the VW bus Kowabungavanklan In May 2015, the vintage VW bus show began at Huntington Beach Pier.
The timeless charm of VW buses
Interestingly, the (VW) Volkswagen bus is also known as the Volkswagen Type 2 and is often referred to as a microbus, duo, or transporter.
VW buses have an iconic history and timeless charm that continues to attract car enthusiasts.
A brief history of VW buses
The idea for the VW bus came from a simple sketch inspired by the freight vehicles that Bempon saw at the VW factory. He designed the VW bus and was introduced in Germany in 1950.
The VW bus was built to be a simple and affordable van for both cargo and passengers. It quickly became known for its practicality and unique appearance.
Why VW Bus has become a cultural icon
In the 1960s and 1970s, VW buses became a symbol of freedom, creativity and exploration. Its practicality and affordability has made it accessible to many people, including hippies, surfers, campers and road trippers. The VW bus was more than just a mode of transportation. It represents a carefree lifestyle and love for adventure.
Why are VW buses so popular today?
As we saw at the VW Busker Show today, the VW Bus has a strong comeback. Here’s why:
Nostalgia: People love the retro look. It reminds me of fun road trips, surfing, and fun, simpler times.
Unique atmosphere: Many people customize the VW bus, so the two vintage buses don’t look exactly the same.
At the car show we saw so many creatively customized VW buses. It was amazing to see the personal touches each owner added.
Community Love: Gatherings like the Kowabungavanklan in Huntington Beach, California showcasing the passion and creativity of VW bus owners and bringing enthusiasts together.
Restoration and modernization: vintage atmosphere, modern comfort
Many classic VW buses we saw have been restored or reconsidered. Some upgrades include:
– New engine
– Cozy camper van interior
– Interesting sound system
– Stylish painting work and murals
These upgraded vehicles are functional and wonderful, and retain the spirit of their original design while adding modern luxury.
Wheel Business: How VW Bus Drives Creativity
VW buses are not just exhibitions, they become the hub for creative mobile business. In Southern California, entrepreneurs use these vintage cars in a smart and stylish way. We met two business owners who use the VW bus –
Daniel Murphy – Sugar Mama @sugarhighroller
Women owned 1959 VW double bar door candy bath. It’s not just a treat, it’s an experience, and the vintage van adds to the charm.
Todd Clark – VW DJ Guy – @thevwdjguy
Vintage VW bus has been transformed into a mobile DJ booth! It brings music and a good atmosphere with a unique set up for weddings, pop-ups, beach parties. One of my favourite VW buses, also featuring disco balls.
Super Fun VW Basker Show: Dog-Friendly Fun in Huntington Beach, California
The weather was perfect and I really enjoyed spending two hours checking out all these cool, vintage VW buses. It was a conversation and chat with passionate VW bus owners. Our dog Kenzo absorbed all the love and pets from them too! It’s an amazing car show and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event.
