Debunking myths about black cats: PDSA veterans share the truth about these mysterious feline friends

The UK is a nation of cat lovers, with an estimated 11 million people living as pets*. However, certain traits can make pets a little overlooked. Sadly, black cats are one of them.

Not only do black cats often have to wait longer than other cats to find homes at rehoming charities, but in a world dominated by social media, black cats receive fewer photos than other “colorful” cats. It is also often said that the appearance is low.

Along with PDSA veterans PDSA Pet Insurance Some of the most common myths about black cats have been debunked.

“Good luck, bad luck, the witch’s pet… there are many myths about our mysterious feline friends, and we admit they’re not all great,” says PDSA veterinarian Lynn James explains.

“But we think black cats are great, and we think there are many reasons why black cats make great pets.”

Lynn debunks some of the biggest myths surrounding black cats.

  1. We are not living in the Middle Ages.

“The myth of black cats and witches is thought to have originated at some point in the Middle Ages. We’re talking a thousand years ago here. They have an overall negative reputation based on the myth. However, they are actually no different from other cats.

  1. Black cats are actually good luck!

“Sailors carried black cats on board their ships, not only to catch mice, but also because they believed black cats brought good luck. In Scotland, a black cat appearing on your doorstep is a symbol of prosperity.

  1. They may live longer.

“According to researchers at the National Institutes of Health, the genes that make their fur black may also protect them from certain diseases. So your black cat is scientifically more likely to get certain diseases.” may be low.

  1. A black cat will help you in your love life.

“Believe it or not, in some parts of the world black cats are considered ‘matchmakers’ and are thought to help their owners find true love. In some parts of the UK, it is considered a perfect wedding gift as it is believed to bring good luck and happiness to the bride.

  1. they were worshiped.

“In ancient Egypt, all cats, including black cats, were worshiped. All cats were considered sacred. In fact, the Egyptian goddess Bastet (who protected the home from evil spirits and diseases) , is often depicted with the body of a woman and the head of a black cat. Bastet is still worshiped today, and some believe that her protection rests with modern cats. ”
