You don’t want guests to immediately notice you have a cat the moment they step into your home, especially if your cat is nowhere to be seen. One challenge I’ve faced over the years is finding the perfect cat litter. Each type of cat litter I’ve tried has its merits, but none is perfect on its own. So I came up with the idea of ”Cat Litter Mixology.”
What is Littermixology?
Cat litter mixology is the art of blending different types of cat litters to create the perfect mix to meet all of your cat’s needs. By combining different litters, you can take advantage of the strengths of each to create a litter box that is more odor-resistant, easier to clean, and more comfortable for your cat – ultimately making cleaning your litter box a much more enjoyable experience.
Why feed mixed diets?
Each type of cat litter has its own benefits. Some clump easily but are heavy, some are light but don’t control odors as well, and some stick to your cat’s paws. By mixing different cat litters, you can create the best combination in all aspects. Here’s the combination I often use:
- Base litter: I use Tidy Cats Unscented as a base and fill the box about 50% with this cat litter – it’s odorless, reliable and makes an easy to pack base.
- Light Scent and Lightweight: Next, I fill the box with about 40% Tidy Cats lightweight cat litter, which reduces the overall weight of the box and makes it easier to clean and maintain. From time to time, I swap out the litter for Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal, which has a pleasant scent and small, sand-like granules.
- Next Generation Odor Control: Finally, add about 10% Skoon fine cat litter, which is made from natural diatomaceous earth. This litter is great at trapping odors, so your litter box will stay cleaner for longer.
How to Create the Perfect Litter Blend
- Choose your base litter: Start with a high-quality, clumping cat litter to form the base of your mixture – it should make up about 50% of the total mixture – and make sure it’s a brand that your cat will like.
- Add a secondary kitten. For added benefits, choose lightweight or scented cat litter, which should make up around 40% of the mixture.
- Top with special litter: Finally, add a specialty cat litter that excels in certain areas, such as odor control, which should make up about 10% of the mix.
Transitioning to a mixed breed dog
Introducing your cat to a new litter mix should be done gradually. Start by mixing a small amount of the new litter mix into your cat’s current litter, gradually increasing the proportions over the course of a week. Observe your cat and adjust the litter mix as needed. I switched one box completely to the litter mix and my cat had no issues, although I left the regular litter box in case one of my cats decided my experiment wasn’t working. Thankfully, they seemed to enjoy the change.
Maintaining toilet mixing
Maintaining a litter box filled with mixed cat litter is similar to any other cat litter box: scoop daily to remove clumps and waste, and change the litter completely every few weeks. Clean the litter box regularly to keep it fresh and comfortable for your cat. When refilling the litter box, mix the litter in the same proportions to keep it in roughly the same condition.
