Hello, this is Dr. Karin. Read my bio, learn more about me, and meet my five cheerful cats: Clutch, Cyril, Alex, Zelda, and Zazzles.
I may be opening a can of worms here, but I’m never one to shy away from controversial topics. Also, I have no scientific data to prove or disprove my views, but I will preface this by saying that this comes from my many experiences. manya long-time cat. In fact, I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t have at least one cat.
So, before I get into the main topic, I would like to state my judgment. This is something I hate to admit as a feminist, but men seem to be the best pets for me. Of course, it really depends on the type of companion you’re looking for.
Let’s get started.
Cats I lived with
I’ve shared my home with a total of 11 cats, including my parents’ Siamese cat, Quincy, who lived with me since before I was born. And with the exception of Quincy, they’re all moggies, and interestingly, they’re pretty evenly spread between both males and females. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve known and worked with, but it’s probably in the thousands.

2. Bindi | ♀️ |
3. Tiger | ♂️ |

5. Gilbert | ♀️ |

Quincy and I were never best friends. When I was 4 years old, I tried to “help” him when he was in a fight with the neighbor’s cat. As a result, he turned on me and left me with a pretty bloody scar. Interestingly, this traumatic event never turned me away from cats, but my relationship with Quincy never recovered.
Sadly, Bindi didn’t stay with us long enough to make a huge impression on my five-year-old self. Bindi met her end at a young age after trying to cross the road towards the alluring smells of KFC. Fortunately, my parents have decided that we can no longer let the cat out.
I’m not going to detail the history of every cat, but over the years I’ve definitely seen some patterns.
behavioral tendencies

Just speaking in general terms, I personally find that male cats tend to be more sociable, friendlier to everyone, and generally more confident. In comparison, female cats appear to be more reserved, take longer to assess situations, and tend to embrace one individual as “her.”
That doesn’t mean male cats are ever fickle or that female cats are always selective about their affections, but these are the types of cats I love as pets, patients, and other cats I know or have heard of. This is a characteristic that I have seen.
That makes sense when you consider the social structure of cats.
It is the male’s prerogative to go out and sow oats. The wider their home range, the more likely they are to have more kittens. As cats have become domesticated over the past few thousand years, it may have been beneficial for tom cats to stay on the good side of humans to avoid being chased away with brooms. Courage and boldness are desirable traits and allow these young people to explore further.
Females, on the other hand, require the care and vigilance necessary to keep themselves and their kittens safe. While it might be helpful to befriend one or two people, you don’t want the entire village to come together when you’re trying to feed your family.
So which is the better pet?

There are no guarantees regarding a cat’s temperament or personality. The more you try to align your cat in one direction, the more likely you are to have the opposite result. However, if you have the characteristics of a cat you want in a partner, choosing the gender that matches your personality may take you one step closer to finding your perfect partner.
Let’s make a list of pros and cons.
♂️ | ♀️ | |
Strong Points | group friendly Be more playful and confident Become more tolerant of other pets |
Be perfectly attached to “that person” As we grow older, we become less confused. observant and emotionally intelligent |
Cons | not so loyal There is less respect for sleep May demand love |
often more capricious be wary of strangers Feel stress more easily |
I like bomb-proof cats with lots of personality who don’t mind living with lots of animals and people. Sure, the boys will quickly abandon you and lap up what looks like the most comfortable, but I’m sure people will enjoy the company of my cats, especially a persuasive and friendly cat like Clutch. I love watching it!
But if you want a quiet, loyal cat who will snuggle with you and give you affection only, a female cat might be just the thing for you. They may not like noisy dogs or children and may hide in a busy house, but when everything is quiet, they may enjoy being chosen by the cat.
decide for yourself

Your experience may be completely different than mine, I’d love to hear about it. I do not recommend choosing a cat purely based on my point of view. One of the best ways to check a cat’s suitability is to visit an animal shelter and meet older kittens or adult cats. By doing so, you’ll get a better understanding of their fully formed personalities, and you’ll also learn that many rescue cats are very grateful to be given a loving home.
