After many years, the calico cat is finally able to leave the harsh life on the streets and seek the comfort of a loving home.

Shortly after Duchess the cat was rescued from the streets, she went into labor and gave birth to four kittens, two of which looked like her.

This beautiful calico cat has likely spent her whole life outdoors, protected from the elements and other animals, and had litter after litter of kittens, and now she’s in a foster home where she can finally relax.

“She was likely born on the streets and has survived to this day, which is amazing,” Little Wanderers NYC said.

Duchess is estimated to be eight years old and was showing the early signs of cataracts, but that didn’t slow her down, as she cuddled her babies in their nesting area and catered to their every whim.

Even before the kittens’ eyes had even opened, the red-headed boy, Dreamsicle, had the ferocity of a lion cub.

He hissed and spat when he caught an unfamiliar scent, his instinct to protect himself in the wild and he wasn’t going to let anything get in his way.

Duchess was very loving and protective of her kittens. After having many litters outdoors, it was a relief to have her last kitten raised in the comfort of a foster home. As she adjusted to the comfort of indoor life, the wariness in her eyes faded.

As the kittens began to explore outside the nest, Duchess was close by, guiding them as they discovered their new world.

Little Duchess, named after her mother, is the last kitten born and is a bit timid around strangers. “Dreamsicle lends her a bit of courage. She loves to sit on my lap and learn (by watching her siblings).”

Mama Duchess is kind to her little one who looks like her and gives her lots of hugs.

She encourages Little Duchess to go on new adventures and joins her when she lounges by the window or in her little bed. “[Mummy]isn’t very people-friendly and doesn’t like to be disturbed, but she does enjoy being with other cats.”

Watching the other kittens running around playing, Little Duchess’s confidence grew. She began batting at toys and chasing rays of sunshine across the floor.

Another calico kitten, Dusty, was mischievous and active from a young age.

Dusty runs around the house like a little tornado, but when it’s time for bed, she collapses, arms and legs flailing. She never meets a stranger, stomping around and happily snuggling with anyone in her path.

“Dreamsicle is the only boy in the litter. He is mischievous, playful, loving and friendly. He takes good care of his sister, Little Duchess.”

“Our fourth kitten, Sparky, is adorable and quirky. She was the last to walk and now the first to explore and play. She loves to be cuddled and is very playful.”

Duchess has no problem being indoors and while she enjoys her own space away from people, she loves the company of other cats and dreams of a home with feline friends where she will feel safe, loved and free from worries.

“No more children. All the Duchess needs is rest and relaxation. She deserves a golden retirement away from the rigors of the city.”
