Black Jack, a cat who spent most of his life roaming the streets, came to the balcony in search of warmth and comfort.
He thought he would hit the jackpot when a young woman took him home, but he ended up in a hoarding situation. As the disease was not treated, he began to deteriorate. One day, several volunteer rescue workers banded together to rescue 10 cats from a crowded house. Blackjack was one of them.
When they found Black Jack, he couldn’t open his eyes. But from that moment on, his life was about to change for the better.

“He was brought to Montreal in a terrible condition, covered in filth, his nose and eyes blocked by an infection,” Chatons Orphélins Montreal said. “Despite everything, he was so hungry that he gulped down his food.”
He was treated for an upper respiratory infection and spent most of his time resting and healing.

For a while, Black Jack became quite reclusive, rarely leaving his place and spending his time sleeping. “When he regained his strength, his foster parents noticed that he had a limp when walking.”
They returned to the vet, where they discovered that Black Jack needed far more care than anyone expected.

“Although the cold was gone, my eyes were painful and kept closing, and my eyelids were rolling inward due to entropion. I also had several infected teeth that needed to be extracted.”
With support from the community, Blackjack underwent eyelid surgery and complete dental treatment. He felt brand new even though he still had a few teeth left.

“When the stitches were removed, I was finally able to see him open his eyes.”
After many difficult years, Black Jack lost his trust in others, but his foster family never stopped trying to convince him. “Given his long recovery, we were eager for him to begin socializing and learn to live without stress.”

“We showed him that he was no longer alone and that the worst was yet to come.”
His adoptive father spent plenty of time with him in his room and tried to feed him his favorite snacks. Slowly but surely, Black Jack emerged from the “cave” and showed interest in his surroundings.

“With positive reinforcement, he started making soft meows whenever people approached him with food and gently placed their paws in their hands.”
His slight limp is a remnant of an old injury that has crooked and healed, and does not prevent him from living a good life. Although they can’t jump like other cats, they navigate their world with amazing resilience. To everyone’s surprise, he was also deaf, but that didn’t faze him one bit.

Black Jack became more confident around humans and gradually started venturing into other areas of the house. When she noticed other cats, her face lit up, showing off her friendly personality. “He meows and wants to be friends with our cats.”
He follows their adventures, exploring every nook and cranny, and watches Cat TV on the screen.

Seven-year-old Black Jack has been through it all. He is deaf, FIV+, and walks with a slight limp, but he has a beautiful heart who craves love and good company.
“He has come out of his shell since his arrival and continues to improve every day.”
