6 dog sleeping positions and what they mean

By SecretWuff 7 Min Read

If you’re a puppy owner, you’ve probably noticed your dog sleeping in a variety of positions, which may or may not seem very comfortable to us. “In most cases, the position your dog chooses to sleep in is likely determined by their preference at that moment,” says Dr. Dr. Patrick HolmboeChief Veterinarian Cooper Pet Care“But there is some information we can get from your sleep position.”

So what does your dog’s sleeping position mean?

Side sleeping

Like most humans, dogs like to sleep on their side with their limbs stretched out and their bellies slightly exposed. Because the tummy is a vulnerable part of the body, this sleeping position often indicates that your puppy is calm and content, says Holmboe. Your puppy is likely in a deep sleep, and may even twitch their legs in a dreamy manner.

Puppies who sleep in this position are typically carefree and will lie down anywhere, but Furhaven Ultra Plush Luxe LoungerIt allows you to lie comfortably and also provides orthopedic support.

Weather can also affect your dog’s sleeping position. If you notice your dog lying on the cool tiles on a hot day, he’s trying to cool down. If this is the case, consider getting him a cooling pad like these: This automatic cooling device from Arf Pets.

In Lion Pose (also known as Sphinx Pose), a puppy who is just falling asleep and wants to stay alert may sleep on his stomach with his head resting on his front paws.

Puppies in lion pose are alert, loyal, and caring towards their families, so if you have a newborn at home, don’t be surprised if your furry pal takes this pose at the foot of your bed.

This pose could also be a sign that your puppy is anxious and ready to jump up at any moment. During times of heightened anxiety, a calming bed like this one is a good choice: Original Calm Shag Fur Donut Cuddler It helps the dog calm down.

According to Holmboe, French bulldogs and pugs are often seen enjoying the Superman pose — lying on their bellies with their hind legs stretched back and their front legs stretched forward — and these pups are just as playful as they are asleep. And because they’re full of energy, you’ll want an indoor-outdoor bed to enjoy your mischievous canine’s playful antics. Frisco Steel Frame Elevated Dog Bed.

Belly Up

Also known as the “dying roach,” this pose is a favorite of greyhounds and other adorable dogs, says Holmboe. The dog lies on its back, stomach fully exposed, with its legs in the air. These dogs are playful and affectionate, but still puppies.

You might be wondering how this position is comfortable or safe for your pup, and Holmboe assures that dogs generally don’t choose to sleep in an uncomfortable position, but as they get older, they may switch to a different position, like sleeping on their side, because sleeping on their stomach puts pressure on their spine.

A dog in the doughnut pose has its body curled up, its limbs close to its body, and its nose close to its tail. This puppy is sweet and caring, but tends to be reserved with strangers or people who are not used to being in their new home. This position traps body heat, so a curled up dog may be cold.

“Dogs who are unwell may also curl up,” says Holmboe, so if you notice your dog in an unusual position, keep a close eye on him and consider scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian.

Cuddle Bug

Holmboe says there’s nothing wrong with having your dog sleep on your bed with you, and that’s exactly the vibe these adorable dogs are going for. But if you don’t want them on your bed, they’ll also happily curl up on the couch with other pets. These dogs tend to be friendly with everyone they meet, furry or not, and are sometimes called Velcro dogs.
