The elastic on my nurse cap broke, so I wasn’t able to wear my nurse uniform as usual for most of my therapy cat visits in October. But my last visit that month was at a children’s hospital, and my human didn’t want to let the kids down. There, she managed to sew on new elastic. This was much more difficult than it looked. And I’m glad I went. I wore both the costume and the hat for the entire visit.
After signing in, my first stop was the arts and crafts table. I had the pleasure of visiting with a young girl and a much younger boy for quite some time. Afterwards, I walked through the lobby and there were several children who were looking forward to seeing me.
The examination room was very crowded and I saw many children. One was a cute little girl wearing a paper hospital gown. I sat on the couch with her and hung out while they waited for the doctor’s appointment. And we could see a boy in another room spending time on an IV drip.
Few visits were pleasant. My human opened the door to the exam room and saw an older boy concentrating on his cell phone. He said he was not interested in meeting me. But then a little girl popped out from behind her mother and her face lit up. So of course we visited with her.
Often there are no patients in the operating room or the patients have already gone home. But we went anyway because humans knew the nurses and staff wanted to see me in my nurse uniform. And some patients came this time too! One was a little girl who spoke Spanish and she petted me for a long time. The other boy was a teenage boy who was lying face down on a stretcher.
Our final stop was rehab. My human saw a 4-year-old girl playing in the waiting room, so she went inside. She was quickly called back and my human asked if there were any other patients receiving PT. One person was finishing so we went inside. It was a teenage girl who was wearing traditional Muslim clothing, so most of her body was covered. She petted me for a while, but it wasn’t until her mother brought a wheelchair and stood up that I realized she only had one leg.
It was a great visit! My human said it was worth the number of times I accidentally pricked my finger while fixing the cap.
