How cats react to TV: Olga’s occasional reactions

By SecretWuff 4 Min Read

Hello, I’m Christopher! To learn more about me and my silly Russian blue cat, Olga, please read my bio.

Unlike their owners, most cats aren’t obsessed with television. This is probably a good thing, because the obesity problem in cats is getting worse. Some indoor cats don’t get enough exercise. If your cat sticks to the tube instead of chasing the rat or running around the house, you’ll gain weight. Olga is not very interested in watching TV, but sometimes she gets irritated by sound effects and soundtracks.

The courage of young Olga

As a kitten, Olga seemed fearless. She wasn’t easily scared until she was 4 years old.th She always ignored the stereo or TV. If I focused too much on the movie, she would attack my legs or climb on top of the chair and hit me on the head. Like many young cats, Olga only had two speeds. High gear and park (sleep).

Christopher, are you watching Monty Python without me?

Her first reaction to TV

She was almost 1 year old when I moved to a new house with more space. I set up the stereo with a powerful subwoofer and watched the first movie Olga ran away from. It was so loud that the MGM lion’s roar sent her flying through the air and running under the bed in another room. She reacted to the roar only once and determined that the sound did not come from a giant wild cat.

Some animal experts recommend leaving the TV or stereo on when you go out to reassure your pet. I’ve never photographed Olga when she’s alone at home, so I don’t know if a nature program or 24-hour feeding in the world’s largest aviary will help with her separation anxiety.

Please turn off the TV! It's past bedtime.

adult ambivalence

She doesn’t listen when she hears birds chirping or nature sounds on the TV. This is strange because I seem confused and irritated when I hear Pink Floyd songs. Several species of small furry animals gathered in a cave and were digging trenches with picks. It’s also strange that Olga doesn’t react to the sound of fireworks on TV. She freezes in fear when she hears explosions in her neighborhood, but she remains unfazed even though the explosions and gunshots are not real.

Please lower the stereo volume. It disturbs my peace.

Trouble with heavy bass

Sometimes movie sound effects will catch her attention, but they rarely escape. She hates the sound of the suicide siren at the end of the movie. alien Or the original opening scream ghost hill house With Vincent Price. But as she approaches the speaker, the only sound that makes her question her sanity is a low, resonating bass.

David Lynch’s films often include prolonged roaring sounds to heighten the suspense or lead to shocking scenes, but Olga doesn’t like the sound effects. I have to turn down the volume so she doesn’t scratch the subwoofer. As for the television images, nothing seems to interest Olga, be it the chirping of songbirds or the sounds of rodents. Some cats may find it helpful to leave the TV on when their owners leave, but Olga prefers humans to flat-screen TVs.
