A couple rescued a tiny three-legged kitten and became attached to him and his “biggest protector.”

When animal rescue group Little Wanderers NYC received an emergency call about a family of cats found outdoors in a neighborhood, they jumped into action.

Volunteers coordinated a rescue effort and got the kittens to safety in the nick of time – the smallest of them was only half the size of his siblings and was missing a leg, but showed incredible grit.

When husband and wife Tatiana and Andrew found out the family needed a foster home, they didn’t hesitate to take on the challenge.

They felt they had to help the feline family. Just a few weeks earlier, the couple had been grieving the loss of their beloved cat, Garfield. “When we saw the photo of the kittens and sick mother, we knew Garfield was asking us to reach out and help him,” Tatiana said.

They received them that night and made them comfortable in their home.

The couple continued to syringe-feed the kittens and provide supportive care, with little three-legged Holland focused on getting bigger in preparation for his surgery while his four-legged siblings grew stronger and more active.

His orange tabby brother, Little Garfield, looked just like the beloved cat the couple lost.

From the beginning, Little Garfield was always by Holland’s side, playing with him and keeping him company. Although he was much bigger than Holland, he was very sweet and caring, and would often wipe his brother’s face after meals.

Holland saw himself as an equal to his brothers and was able to hold his own while playing.

Just a few weeks old, Holland tried to climb the playpen on his three mobile legs as if he could conquer anything.

Thanks to good food and lots of love from his foster parents, he’s nearly caught up with his siblings and grown up enough to have surgery to remove the amputated leg to improve his quality of life.

Holland was small, but his determination overcame all obstacles. He quickly regained his energy after the surgery and devoured a plate of food. The veterinary staff was amazed at Holland’s amazing recovery and voracious appetite.

A few days later, he was going around like nothing had happened.

“While most of us slowly recover, this little kitten barely realised he only had three legs.”

His brothers hugged him and tucked him in, as if to help him recover. His brother, Little Garfield, became his “biggest protector” and rarely left his side. Surrounded by love, Holland quickly made a full recovery and thrived.

It took an entire village and an extraordinary effort to save this cat family, and after a few months in foster care, they’re ready to embark on the next chapter of their journey.

“Raising Little Garfield, Holland and his two brothers has brought me back to life and made everything make sense again. Little Garfield looks just like my angel Garfield and even behaves a lot like him,” Tatiana added.

The couple became enamored with the three-legged cat and his best friend, “and eventually decided to adopt Garfield and Holland.”

Her two other siblings have also found permanent homes, and the mother cat has moved into a wonderful family who have helped her adjust to indoor life.

“I’m so grateful to Little Wanderers for saving my kitten. Without their help Holland wouldn’t have survived. He’s the healthiest, most adorable kitten ever.”
