A cat hid under a chair at an animal shelter, but was found with a kitten the night it was taken into a home.

Eden, a tabby dog, came to the animal shelter with another cat. Terrified, she evaded the staff and hid under a chair. “She needed a quiet place to relax and come out of her shell,” the staff member said.
The other cat was quickly adopted, but Eden’s stay was extended as she became overwhelmed by the shelter’s environment and continued to hide. Determined to gain her trust, the staff began interacting with her using scratchers.
Immediately, she arched her back and began to knead, as if a switch had been flipped by the pleasant sensation.

Once Eden became more comfortable and allowed them to be touched, they confirmed what they had suspected. “The volunteer discovered she was pregnant,” said Heidi Shoemaker, founder of Foster Kitten Moms.
Thanks to many caring volunteers, she was rescued and taken to a nursing home with Heidi.

Heidi sat with Eden for an hour to ease her worries after a stressful move. She treated him for his flea-ridden fur and gave him plenty of food to fill his stomach. Unexpectedly, that night Eden went into labor.
She was lying in the nest box, looking relieved that Heidi was by her side, supporting her the entire time.

By the next day, Eden was happily nursing three kittens. Two cow kittens (Evan and Everett) and a leopard (Ellis) quickly prove to cause drama in the family with their demanding and loud voices.
For the first few days, Eden needed a lot of help and encouragement to stay in the nest and feed the kittens.

“I put half of her pen over the top of the nest box, and that seems to make her safer. Not all mothers know right away what to do, but… Eden was definitely one of them. Once fed in bed, Eden began to open up to her foster mother and grew to trust her more and more each day.

Everett was the first to open his eyes, curiously staring at the world beyond the nest, and his siblings soon followed suit. Their mother catered to their every whim, making sure they were fed, clean, and loved.
Eden was still a little scared, but always made “biscuits” (knead a blanket) and allowed her adoptive mother to pet her a little.

As the kitten’s legs grew stronger, it started waddling around and trying to get out of the nest frame. Even if the mother is enjoying the break, the slightest peek will cause her to rush back to her baby.
Once the trio graduated to the spacious playpen, they immediately jumped into the water bowl and played with the toys.

Eventually, they conquered their first cat pillar summit and rapidly honed their climbing skills.
At 6 weeks old, kittens are reaching many milestones and growing by leaps and bounds. “Eden gets a lot better the more I sit with her. It takes patience and compassion and time to undo the bad things that happened to them.”
