What is ButcherBox for Pets?
ButcherBox for Pets may be relatively new to the dog food delivery service industry, but the ButcherBox brand has been around for at least a few years. I’m not sure exactly when they started, but I helped review their human food delivery service on my blog a few years ago. Quite opinionatedIt was 2018, so at least 6 years ago.
One of the things that impressed me most is that their beef is grass-fed (pasture-raised), their chicken is free-range, and all of their meats are of the highest quality and come from the most ethical sources possible, so when I heard ButcherBox was also launching a line for pets, I was excited to see if all of these benefits carried over to their dog food. Spoiler alert – they do.

Strong Points
As always, I’ll start with a quick rundown of the benefits and then go into a bit more detail.
- High Protein and Low Fat
- Grain Free
- No artificial additives
- Ethically Sourced
- Convenience
- Customizable subscriptions
High protein, low fat:
ButcherBox for Pets dog food’s main ingredient is chicken, a high-quality, easily digestible protein that provides your dog with the essential amino acids they need for overall health and vitality, making it a great choice for dogs who lead active lifestyles (like my dog Freya) or those recovering from an illness or injury.
Low fat is a no-brainer. Yes, dogs need fat for energy and nutrient absorption, but too much fat can lead to weight gain and increased risk of joint problems, diabetes and heart disease.
By keeping fat levels moderate and containing mostly healthy fats, ButcherBox for Pets helps dogs maintain a healthy weight while providing the essential fatty acids they need for energy, healthy skin and a lustrous coat. This balance makes this food ideal for dogs who are prone to weight gain as it promotes lean muscle building without excess fat accumulation.
Grain Free
First, there’s the obvious pro: It’s suitable for dogs with grain allergies or sensitivities. But beyond that, grain-free formulas often contain alternative sources of fiber and carbohydrates, like sweet potato or peas, which can be easier for some dogs to digest and provide sustained energy.
Ethically Sourced
ButcherBox places a strong emphasis on responsibly and ethically sourced ingredients, which is a huge plus for those of us who care about sustainability and animal welfare: The chicken used in their dog food comes from farms that follow humane practices.
Essentially, animals are raised without hormones or antibiotics in a healthy, stress-free (free-range) environment.
Convenient and customizable subscriptions
Customizable subscriptions are a big advantage for busy pet owners because they allow you to tailor your delivery schedule to your dog’s specific needs, so you can choose how often you receive fresh supplies: monthly, biweekly, or even more frequently if you have multiple dogs or larger breeds that consume more food.
Plus, if you need to pause or change an order, your subscription can be easily modified, giving you peace of mind and reducing waste and excess inventory.
Speaking of customization, ButcherBox not only lets you customize the amount of dog food you receive (and how often). After answering a few questions about your dog, you’ll see a screen like this:
Did you notice the “Next” button at the bottom? Click on it and you’ll see the following screen:
We had to zoom out quite a bit to show you all the extra options, from food toppings to treats to toys.
If you have a picky puppy, Chicken and quinoa recipe topperFreya loves this one.The first five ingredients (and what make up the majority of the food) are organic chicken, chicken broth, carrots, green beans and quinoa.
I also highly recommend buying a few bags of sweets from this store. They have a few different sets, but you can also buy individual bags. We All Natural Turkey Jerky, Calming Support Chew, and Salmon treats for skin and fur supportThey’re all soft chewy treats (though some are softer than others), so they can easily be split into smaller training treats if needed.
Cons
ButcherBox for Pets is a great product, but it does have some drawbacks. Again, we’ll give you a quick rundown and then go into more detail.
- Limited flavor
- price
- Subscription Agreement
Limited flavor:
At this time, the adult flavors and recipes are chicken only, and the kids flavors and recipes are turkey only. puppyIf your dog is allergic to those proteins, this food is not suitable.
Keep in mind, though, that ButcherBox for Pets is still a new company, so there may be additional recipes coming in the future. I know they’re currently working on cat food, but I’m sure they’re continuing to develop their product line.
price:
The prices are higher than other premium dog foods sold in stores or at Chewy/PetSmart, but they’re about the same as other dog food delivery services. Expect to pay anywhere from $1 to $2.35 per meal, depending on your dog’s size.
Subscription Agreement:
While the subscription model is convenient, it may not appeal to those who prefer to buy on an as-needed basis. However, it’s worth noting that while you need a plan to buy dog food, most of the treats, toppers, and toys can be purchased individually.
Plus, you can cancel at any time from your account, so if you try it out and it’s not for you, you don’t have to keep using it.
Conclusion
ButcherBox for Pets offers premium dog food that combines high-quality natural ingredients with the convenience of home delivery. For pet owners who prioritize nutrition and convenience, it’s a solid option, and the subscription model means you’ll never run out of food. However, the high price and limited flavor options may be a drawback for some.
If you’re looking for a hassle-free way to ensure you’re giving your dog the best, ButcherBox for Pets is worth considering, especially if you’re a fan of ButcherBox’s human foods.
