One kind person was willing to look after a kitten for a few days, but another cat she rescued had different ideas.

A good Samaritan found a tiny calico cat without its mother or siblings in a backyard, and after searching and waiting to find it, he turned to local animal rights activist Patricia Rica for help.

Penny, a 3-4 week old kitten, would not have been able to survive outdoors in the relentless heat, so Patricia took her into her home and began bottle-feeding her 24/7.

Penny quickly sought the love of her foster mom. Despite her small size, she had a big appetite and was very vocal.

To ensure the kitten never felt lonely, Patricia spent plenty of time with him, keeping him entertained and reassuring him that he was loved: “He settled in quickly and enjoyed being the only kitten to be pampered.”

Whenever Penny wanted attention, she spoke her mind loud and clear.

Once outside the playpen, he made friends with the cats who lived there and enjoyed having constant company. He discovered the joy of toys and found he could play peek-a-boo under the sofa.

“She loved being outside in her kitten enclosure and quickly bonded with my older cats, but we always thought it would be nice to have another kitten her size.”

Around the time Penny was found, fellow animal activist Nikki had rescued a two-week-old kitten in need of a home from the city’s shelter.

“She was very averse to bottle-feeding so for a while we had to tube-feed her to survive,” Nikki told LoveMeow.

She named her little leopard Beatrix, or Bea, which means “bringer of happiness” or “blessed one.”

Thanks to her foster mom’s dedicated care, Bea became more alert and eventually learned to feed herself. Nikki breathed a sigh of relief when Bea was strong enough to climb the nursery with her tiny claws.

At 4.5 weeks old, Bea learned how to eat from her own bowl and was doing great on the toilet.

As her legs got stronger, she became braver and more mischievous. One day, she climbed out of the playpen and made her foster parents’ room her own play area. “Seeing her like that makes all the late-night feedings and cleaning worth it.”

“Baby Bee has a very sweet personality. He always seems content and never meows. He easily entertains himself so I think he’ll do fine as an independent cat.”

Nikki was away at a convention last weekend and left Patricia to babysit Bea.

As soon as she entered the house, Bee swaggered in as if it were her own home. With no fear whatsoever, she hopped on the robot vacuum and rode around like it was her own magic carpet.

They assumed Bea would only be staying for a few days, but little did they know that Penny had plans of her own.

Penny quickly took Bea under her wing, sharing her toys and blankets with her. “They quickly became best friends and played together all day.”

The cats ran around the house, hopped on the couch, danced at their owners’ feet, begged for attention, and after long hours of playing, curled up and purred to sleep.

The perfect partners in crime, they dabbled in all sorts of mischief and always ended up crashing side by side after playing all day.

When the weekend was over, Patricia saw her two best friends and couldn’t bring herself to separate them. She asked Nikki if Bea should stay with Penny and Nikki agreed.

“We have to do what’s best for her, and that’s what being a foster parent is all about,” Nikki said.

Both were rescued from tough situations and are now thriving with loving foster families and friendly house cats.
